The midfield functions as a five man block to control the center of the pitch. Guemez and C. Gruezo form a double pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. In front of them, K. Palacios, Sordo, and E. Bullaude operate to connect the defensive unit with the lone striker. These players must shift together to close down passing lanes, with K. Palacios and Sordo looking to drive forward into space once the ball is won.

To attack, the team relies on the movement of L. Di Yorio, who operates as a lone striker. The front line works by pressing the opposition defenders to force mistakes, while L. Di Yorio holds up the ball to allow the midfield to push up. Because the formation lacks natural wingers, the attack depends on the wide midfielders and full backs to provide crosses and width. This requires L. Di Yorio to work hard to create space for late runs from E. Bullaude and the others.

Santos Laguna finds success through their ability to maintain compactness when defending deep. The presence of the double pivot with Guemez and C. Gruezo allows for immediate protection when the team loses possession. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can move the ball from the back four to L. Di Yorio in very few passes.
