Starting Lineup

COURTOIS · SMIT · PAZ · RAMON · HUIJSEN · BELLINGHAM · MBAPPE · VALVERDE · VITINHA · CARRERAS · GUEHI

Real Madrid looks to control matches through heavy pressing and quick vertical transitions in a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the pitch by using width and high intensity to force errors from the opposition. The goal is to recover the ball high up the pitch and immediately look to break the lines with direct passing.

Thibaut Courtois acts as the last line of defense for Real Madrid, providing massive presence in goal. The back three consists of Huijsen in the center, flanked by Guehi on the left and Ramon on the right. Guehi and Ramon cover wide areas to protect the flanks, while Huijsen holds the central zone. This defensive unit can step up to squeeze the space, making it harder for opponents to play through the middle.

The midfield works as a central bank of four to control the tempo and transition play. Vitinha and Smit occupy the central spaces to shield the defenders and connect the back line to the attack. Vitinha is known for his passing range and ability to keep possession under pressure. On the edges, Valverde and Carreras operate as wing backs, providing much needed width and running deep to support the attack. Valverde uses his high engine to track back and help the defense.

In the attacking third, the team uses three players to stretch the opponent. Mbappe leads the line as the lone striker, using his pace and clinical finishing to find space between defenders. Bellingham operates on the left wing, often cutting inside to find goalscoring opportunities and using his ball carrying ability. Paz provides the width on the right, looking to cross or isolate defenders in one on one situations. This front three presses hard to disrupt the buildup of the opposition.

One major advantage of this 3-4-3 is the ability to create wide overloads when Valverde and Carreras push high. This forces the opposition wingers to track back, often leaving their own players out of position. The combination of Vitinha and Smit in the middle allows for compactness when defending a low block. Furthermore, the speed of transition from the midfield to Mbappe and Bellingham makes this team very dangerous on the counter attack.

This formation creates a high pressing environment that punishes teams unable to play out from the back. It is most effective against opponents that play a high defensive line and leave space behind their defenders.
