Doane stands between the posts to command the box. The defense operates with a flat back four where Osei-Addo plays as the right back and Stubbs sits on the left. Kouhyar acts as the right center back while Merkaj holds the left center back position. These defenders must step up to squeeze the space and prevent the opposition from building play through the middle.

A double pivot controls the center of the pitch to provide some stability. Ikegami and Golemac work together to shield the back four and break up play. Ikegami and Golemac need to cover a lot of ground to link the defense to the attack. They are responsible for recycling possession and making sure the transition from defense to offense happens quickly.

The attack is very aggressive with four players staying high. Karakan plays on the right wing and Ciric operates on the left. In the center, Pisaneschi and Diouck work as a pair of forwards to occupy the central defenders. Karakan and Ciric often look to cut inside or cross the ball into the box. Pisaneschi and Diouck work to hold up the ball and create space for the wingers to run into.

One major advantage for Freiburg is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. Having four attackers allows the team to harass the opposing defenders and force mistakes. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs push forward to support the wingers. This forces the opposition back and creates more passing lanes in the final third.
