Starting Lineup

Castro · Cambiaghi · Miranda · Holm · Lucumí · Heggem · Orsolini · Pobega · Ferguson · Odgaard · Skorupski

Bologna relies on a high press and quick verticality to disrupt opponents, using a 2-5-3 formation to control the center of the pitch. This lineup aims to dominate the middle third and squeeze the space available to the opposition through aggressive positioning. By packing the central areas, the team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and launch immediate attacks.

Skorupski stays between the posts to organize the back line as the team operates with a very high line. The defensive unit consists of Lucumí and Heggem acting as the two central defenders. Lucumí provides composure in possession while Heggem offers strength to intercept long balls and cover space. Because there are only two players in the deep line, they must step up quickly to stop runners and keep the team compact.

The midfield is the engine of the Bologna lineup, operating with five players to ensure control. Miranda and Holm form a double pivot to shield the defense, with Holm working to break the line through tackles and Miranda holding his position to prevent counter attacks. Ferguson and Pobega operate in the half spaces to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. Odgaard plays as the attacking ten, finding pockets of space between the lines to create chances for the forwards.

The attacking front line utilizes three players to stretch the opposition defense. Cambiaghi and Orsolini act as wide attackers, with Orsolini looking to cut inside and Cambiaghi using his pace to attack the flanks. Castro acts as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and occupy the central defenders. This trio works to press the opponent defenders immediately upon losing possession, forcing mistakes in the final third.

This formation offers significant advantages through numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By having five midfielders, the team can often outnumber the opposition and dominate the ball. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with Odgaard and the front three forcing the play into crowded areas. The wide players also allow the team to switch play quickly once the midfield has secured control.

This setup is built for a high intensity game where control of the middle is the main priority. It is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play through a dense midfield block.
