Starting Lineup

Matisli · Dijkstra · Quarshi · Edwards · Wellington · Charles · Jander · Robinson · Merah · Bouhadane · Rubino

A high pressing and vertical way of playing defines this lineup in a 4-2-4. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and hit the opposition in behind as quickly as possible. This formation is built to overwhelm opponents in the final third and stretch the defence through sheer numbers in the attacking line.

Matisli acts as the last line of defence in goal. The back four operates as a flat defensive line to maintain compactness. Dijkstra plays as the right back and is tasked to support the attack while Wellington operates on the left as an attacking full back. In the center, Edwards and Quarshi form the central defensive pairing, with Edwards playing as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. They must work together to hold the line and cover the space left when the full backs push high.

The midfield operates as a central pairing that must work incredibly hard to bridge the gap between the defense and the front four. Charles plays as a single pivot to shield the defence and intercept passes. Jander acts as the advanced link, driving forward with the ball to connect the lines. Because there are only two players in this central zone, Charles must often drop between the centre backs to receive the ball, while Jander looks to find pockets of space to support the attack.

This front four is designed to pin the last defender and create constant chaos. Robinson and Rubino occupy the wide areas as wingers who look to cut inside and create overloads. Merah and Bouhadane operate as a two forwards partnership in the center. Merah acts as a pressing centre forward to lead the hunt, while Bouhadane looks to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind. The team attacks in combinations, looking for quick one-twos to break the line and get to the byline.

One major advantage of this 4-2-4 is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build from the back. The presence of four attackers allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations frequently. This lineup also creates massive pressure on the opposition's centre backs, forcing them into mistakes that lead to quick transitions.

This formation relies on intense pressure and rapid movement to catch opponents off guard. It is best suited for games where the team needs to chase a result against a side that struggles to play out from a high press.
