Focusing on a high press and verticality, this team operates with a 4-2-4 formation. The lineup is built to pin the opposition deep and win the ball high up the pitch to catch them on the transition. This selection is designed to stretch the defence and use heavy numbers in the final third to overwhelm a retreating backline.
PANFILI guards the goal as the lone goalkeeper. Behind a flat back four, TROVATO and PUGLISI act as the central defensive pair. TROVATO plays as the right-sided centre-back while PUGLISI occupies the left-sided role. They must hold the line and remain compact to prevent through balls. On the flanks, CARVALHO operates as the right-back and SAMANE plays as the left-back. They are tasked to defend wide areas and cover the space if the wide attackers push high, ensuring the team remains hard to break down when the opposition counters.
A double pivot forms the engine room of the midfield. VISINTIN and PAPASERIO sit in front of the defence to shield the back four. VISINTIN acts as one of the two central midfielders to control the tempo and recycle possession. PAPASERIO works alongside him to pick up runners and protect the half-spaces. This pair is responsible for connecting the defensive unit to the attack by playing short from the back and moving the ball quickly to the forward line. They must maintain a compact shape to deny the opponent space in the center of the pitch.
The attacking front line uses four players to attack in combinations. BAMBA plays as the right winger and PASSEWE occupies the left wing. Both players are expected to stay wide to stretch the defence and create space in the middle. In the central area, PRESTIA and COSENDEY act as a two-man striking partnership. They function as two forwards who press the opposition back line relentlessly. PRESTIA and COSENDEY work to link up play between the lines and make runs in behind the defenders to create goal scoring chances.
This formation offers several tactical advantages for this team. The use of four attackers allows for a high press in coordinated waves to force a long ball from the opponent. There is also a significant threat in transition because the team can quickly find the feet of the strikers. By spreading wide with BAMBA and PASSEWE, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations.
The 4-2-4 lineup relies on heavy attacking pressure and rapid vertical movements. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and struggle to cope with constant pressure in their own box.
