The midfield relies on a double pivot to connect the defense to the front three. Juninho Pernambucano sits in the right central midfield role, using his renowned passing range and set piece delivery to dictate the tempo. Chiesa works alongside him in the left central midfield position to drive the ball forward and break lines. This duo must work hard to track back and cover the gaps left by the advancing wing backs, ensuring the middle of the pitch remains compact when the team loses possession.

Lyon builds their attack through three dedicated forwards. Di Nallo acts as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and bring others into play. On the flanks, Gouvou cuts inside from the left to create central threats, while Malouda operates from the right to stretch the defense. When Revelliere and Mignot overlap, they force the opposing wingers to track back, often leaving the wide attackers like Malouda in one on one situations. Additionally, the three central defenders provide immense security against crosses, making the Lyon defense very difficult to break down in a low block. The team can also shift rapidly from a wide attacking presence to a compact defensive unit of five.
