The midfield functions as a five man unit designed to clog the center of the pitch. Cullman and Flohe sit in a double pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. Ahead of them, Overath connects the play with his passing range, while Schafer and Littbarski occupy the left and right channels of the midfield. This group works to track back when out of possession and push up to press the opposition once the ball is lost.

Attacking duties fall primarily to Allofs, who operates as a lone striker. He must hold up the ball and wait for the midfield to arrive to support the move. The attack relies on the wide players, Schafer and Littbarski, to cut inside and create chances in the half spaces. By stretching the opposition defense, the team creates pockets for Overath to run into. The forwards press high to prevent the opposition from building play from the back.

Köln gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the central midfield area. This makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle without losing possession. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, with the midfield and attack working together to trap the opponent.
