A high pressing and vertical identity defines St. Gallen as they operate in a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball back quickly and moving it forward with speed to catch the opposition out of position. The team seeks to control central areas while remaining extremely dangerous on the break through direct runs.

JEANNERET stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. Behind him, a back three consists of DENOON, SCHERRER, and MESSERLI. DENOON acts as the central anchor, while SCHERRER and MESSERLI cover the channels and provide aerial strength. The wide defenders, SCHERRER at right wing back and GARCIA at left wing back, provide the necessary width. SCHERRER is tasked to overlap frequently to add numbers in the final third, while GARCIA must track back to ensure the team does not get caught on the break.

The midfield operates as a single pivot with a trio of players controlling the middle of the pitch. ZBINDEN sits in the holding role to shield the defense and intercept passes. Ahead of him, JAGGI and WITZIG act as the two central midfielders who drive forward to link the lines. JAGGI works to break the line with vertical passes, while WITZIG helps to press high and connect the ball from the defenders to the attackers.

St. Gallen utilizes two forwards to stretch the opposition defense. HOFER and EFEKELE lead the line as a striking duo. They do not play as a lone striker but instead work together to hold up the ball and create space. HOFER often occupies the defenders to allow EFEKELE to run into channels. When defending from the front, both forwards press the opposition center backs to force long balls or mistakes.

The main tactical advantages of this formation are the ability to create wide overloads and the compactness when defending. By having SCHERRER and GARCIA push high, the wing backs create extra passing lanes. In the defensive phase, the three central defenders and three midfielders create a very narrow block that is hard to pass through. This setup also allows for quick transitions where the team shifts from a deep block to a heavy press in seconds.

This 5-3-2 formation makes St. Gallen a very difficult unit to break down centrally. It is a lineup best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and require a disciplined counter attacking response.
