The midfield operates as a three man unit that connects the defense to the two forwards. NIKO and MARCELO occupy the central roles, working to shield the back three and break up opposition play. They often drop deep to help the defenders pick up the ball. MATEO sits slightly ahead as an attacking midfielder to drive the team forward. MATEO looks to find pockets of space between the lines to create chances with his passing.

Two forwards lead the line to stretch the opposition defense. ALEN and MARIO play as the main attacking threats. They often work together to hold up the ball or run into channels behind the opposition back line. The presence of ALEN and MARIO forces the opposing defenders to stay narrow, which creates space for SIME and DARIJO to overlap and deliver crosses into the box.

Croatia finds success through their ability to create numerical superiority in the defensive third. The combination of the three central defenders and the three midfielders makes it very difficult for opponents to find space in the middle. Another strength is the speed of transition when MATEO finds MARIO or ALEN during a counter attack. The formation allows the team to shift quickly from a deep block to a vertical attacking move.
