Martin acts as a covering defender while Eivind stays strong to win aerial duels. On the flanks, Lorenzo and Charalampos provide the width, often pushing up to support the attack, which requires the central defenders to step up and cover the space behind them.

In the center of the pitch, a double pivot controls the middle area. Nikola and Tommaso work together to shield the defense and break the lines with their passing. They must be disciplined to prevent counter attacks, as they sit ahead of the back four to intercept passes. The offensive unit is extremely aggressive, utilizing two wide players and two central strikers. Benja and Federico operate on the wings, looking to cut inside or deliver crosses into the box. In the middle, Jonathan and Ciro lead the line as two forwards. This duo focuses on holding up the ball and making runs behind the defense to stretch the opposing center backs. The forwards press in a coordinated way to stop the build up from the opponent.

Bologna finds success by creating wide overloads and isolating defenders in one on one situations. Because the formation pushes four players high, it creates constant pressure on the opposition back line. The speed of transition is a major advantage, as the double pivot can immediately find the front four to catch the defense out of position.
