Starting Lineup

Jashari · Saelemaekers · Pavlovic · Gabbia · Giménez · Leão · Pulisic · Nkunku · Rabiot · Ricci · Maignan

A heavy emphasis on verticality and controlling the middle defines Milan in this 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate central areas by crowding the pitch, making it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. By pushing five players into the midfield, the team seeks to drive forward quickly and overwhelm the opposition with numbers during the transition from defense to attack.

Mike Maignan guards the goal, acting as the primary organizer from the back. In front of him, a narrow back two consisting of Gabbia and Pavlovic must remain extremely disciplined. Since there are no full backs, these two central defenders must step up to intercept long balls and cover the wide spaces left behind. They act as a foundation, requiring high concentration to manage large amounts of space when the team pushes high up the pitch.

The midfield is the engine of this formation, organized as a five man unit that links the defense to the attack. Jashari and Saelemaekers sit in the deeper roles to shield the two central defenders and provide a platform for others to move forward. Moving slightly higher, Rabiot and Ricci occupy the central channels to control the tempo and break the line with progressive passes. Pulisic operates as an attacking midfielder, finding pockets of space between the lines to create chances for the front three.

Leading the offensive line, Giménez works as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the opposition defenders. On the flanks, Leão and Nkunku provide immense width and directness. Leão uses his explosive pace and dribbling to beat defenders on the wing, while Nkunku looks to cut inside to find shooting opportunities. This front three presses aggressively, forcing mistakes from the opponent to win the ball in high areas.

One major advantage for Milan is the numerical superiority in the middle of the park. With five midfielders, the team can easily outnumber most standard midfields, allowing Rabiot and Ricci to dictate play. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads through the combination of the wingers and the wide midfielders. This makes it hard for the opponent to mark both the wide attackers and the players pushing up from the middle.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward system designed for total dominance. It is most effective against teams that play a narrow formation and struggle to deal with intense central pressure.
