MATHEUS operates as the left central defender, while IVÁN covers the right side, leaving EDUARDO to command the center. This trio can step up to intercept passes or drop deep to cover space. The wide midfielders, GENY and RICARDO, cover the entire flanks, often pushing high to act as wing backs to support the attack or tracking back to help the central defenders when the team sits deep.

The midfield operates in a flat four to control the central zones. HIDEMASA and JOÃO act as the central pair, tasked with holding the ball and breaking the line with forward passes. These two must protect the back three by sitting in the passing lanes and intercepting play. Sporting CP gains a massive advantage through wide overloads created by GENY and RICARDO when they overlap the wingers. This allows the team to isolate LUÍS and ALISSON in one on one situations against full backs.
