The wing backs, Omar and João, are required to drop deep to form a five man line when defending a low block. They must track back quickly to prevent crosses and ensure the central defenders are not left isolated in wide areas.

The midfield functions as a central engine room through a central pair of players. Georgios and Tamás occupy the two central spots to shield the back three and break up play. They work to intercept passes and immediately find the wide players to initiate attacks. This central duo connects the defense to the forward line by recycling possession or playing direct balls to the wing backs. Their primary job is to maintain control of the center and allow the wide players to push high up the pitch.

In the final third, the attacking unit moves as a front three. Karem leads the line as the lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball and making runs into the channels. Antonis and Diogo operate as wide attackers, often cutting inside to create space for the overlapping runs of Omar and João. This front line presses high to force turnovers in the opponent half. The movement of the three attackers is designed to drag defenders out of position and create gaps in the middle.

This tactical setup provides several advantages for Rio Ave. The wide positioning of Omar and João creates constant overloads on the flanks, often leaving the opposition full backs outnumbered.
