The defensive unit relies on high anticipation to stop transitions before they can exploit the lack of full backs.

The midfield block is dense, consisting of four players who connect the defense to the attack. B Aubaas acts as the anchor to shield the back line, while K Mudau and F Basedien operate in the half spaces to drive the ball forward. M Reisinho sits in the attacking midfield role to create chances and find gaps between the opposition lines. This midfield group works to win the ball back quickly and switch play to find the wide attackers.

Offense flows through a heavy front line of four players. B Leon and A Sales provide the width, with B Leon operating from the left and A Sales from the right to stretch the defense. In the center, M Allende and N Santos act as a dual strike force to occupy both central defenders. These forwards press the opposition backline intensely to force long balls, which the central defenders can then intercept.

Sundowns find significant tactical advantages through their aggressive positioning. The four midfielders and four attackers create massive numerical superiority in the attacking zones, making it difficult for opponents to mark everyone. This formation also allows the team to press high in coordinated waves, suffocating the opponent in their own territory. The ability to isolate B Leon or A Sales in one on one situations on the flanks is another key way they break down blocks.
