Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Vicario (Martinez/Calligaris) · Comuzzo (Akanji) · Gila (Bisseck) · Bastoni · Manu Kone (Stankovic) · Bernardo Silva (Akinsanmiro) · Barella (Sucic/Zielinski) · Dimarco (Carlos Augusto) · Palestra (Diouf) · Lautaro (Lookman/V. Carboni) · Pio Esposito (Bonny)A heavy reliance on verticality and rapid transitions defines this Inter lineup in a 3-5-2. The team aims to control the center of the pitch and strike quickly once they regain possession. By using this formation, Inter looks to dominate the middle areas while keeping enough numbers back to prevent being caught out on the break.
Vicario stands between the posts to organize the defense from the back. A back three consisting of Gila, Comuzzo, and Bastoni forms the core of the defensive unit. Comuzzo and Gila provide physical presence and aerial strength in the middle, while Bastoni acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks from deep. The wing backs, Dimarco and Palestra, must work hard to cover the entire flank, dropping deep to form a five man line when defending or pushing high to provide width in the attacking phase.
The midfield operates with a single pivot and two central midfielders to control the tempo. Manu Kone sits in front of the defense to shield the back three and intercept passes. Ahead of him, Barella uses his intense pressing and ability to drive the ball forward to link the play. Bernardo Silva operates in the same area, using his precise passing range to break the line and find the attackers. This midfield group works together to press opponents and quickly switch play to the wide areas.
Two strikers lead the line to force the opposition defenders into constant movement. Lautaro operates as the primary focal point, often dropping slightly to hold up the ball or pull defenders out of position. Pio Esposito plays alongside him to run into the channels and occupy the center backs. This two man frontline relies on the service from Dimarco and Palestra, who cross the ball from wide positions to create chances in the box.
This formation provides significant tactical advantages through its ability to control the central zone. Having Barella and Bernardo Silva in the middle creates a high level of technical quality to keep possession and break lines. Inter also benefits from the wide overloads created when Dimarco and Palestra overlap with the wingers. This makes it difficult for opponents to track runners while simultaneously defending the wide areas.
The 3-5-2 formation allows Inter to be both defensively compact and dangerous on the break. It is a setup best suited for matches against teams that play with a high line or those that struggle to handle constant pressure in the middle of the pitch.
