A defensive focus defines Ghana as they operate in a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before looking to strike on the break. The Black Stars aim to remain compact and deny space between the lines, making them difficult to break down through the middle.

Nico Williams starts between the posts to command the area. A back five provides a heavy defensive block consisting of Semenyo, Kudus, and Mainoo in the central positions. Mainoo and Kudus provide cover and strength in the air, while Semenyo works to sweep behind them. Leweling acts as the left wing back to provide width and track back, while Doku pushes up as the right wing back to support the defensive line.

The midfield unit works in a flat line to maintain compactness. Baidoo and Hien sit in the center to shield the defense and intercept passes. Hien acts to break up play while Baidoo looks to win the ball and switch play to the flanks. On the edges, Hudson-Odoi stays wide on the left to provide an outlet, and Frimpong operates on the right to push forward and track back when the team loses possession.

Ghana relies on a lone striker in Owusu-Oduro to lead the line. The attacking movement is designed to hold up the ball and allow the midfielders to push forward. Hudson-Odoi and Frimpong provide the width necessary to stretch the opposition, while the wing backs overlap to create passing lanes. Owusu-Oduro must press the opposition center backs to force mistakes and create long ball opportunities.

This formation offers great compactness when defending in a low block. The primary advantage comes from the ability to create wide overloads when Leweling and Doku push up to support the wingers. Ghana can also use the speed of transition to catch opponents off guard as the wing backs and midfielders sprint forward once the ball is recovered.
