Seeking to dominate the center of the pitch and strike quickly on the break, this team utilizes a 3-5-2 formation. The lineup is built to control the middle ground through high numbers in the central areas while maintaining a solid base to prevent being caught out. By using five midfielders, the team aims to win the second ball and dictate the tempo of the game.

Claudio Bravo sits between the posts to direct the back line. The defensive unit operates with a back three consisting of Herrera, Yepes, and Naldo. Naldo acts as the central figure in this trio, providing physical presence to win the header and clear the lines when under pressure. Herrera and Yepes provide cover on the left and right, looking to squeeze the space when the team presses. This three man unit stays compact to deny the turn to any oncoming attackers.

The midfield is a dense block designed to dominate possession and press aggressively. Guimaraes sits in a central role to shield the defence and recycle possession. Alongside him, Navas and Sylvinho provide the engine to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Gasgoigne and Aguinaga operate in the half spaces as attacking midfielders, looking to find the feet of the strikers or arrive late into the box. This heavy midfield presence allows the team to congest the middle and cut off the passing lane to the opposition.

In the final third, the team uses two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defence. Makaay plays as the left striker, often looking to run in behind or hold up the ball for others. Ortiz acts as the right striker, working in combination with the midfielders to create chances. They press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow the attacking midfielders to play through the lines.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the center. The presence of Gasgoigne and Aguinaga allows the team to overwhelm the opposition mid block and create quick combinations. Additionally, the team can shift quickly between a mid block and a high press to win the ball back high up the pitch.

This 3-5-2 lineup is built for teams that want to control the central zone and strike through the middle. It is best suited for games against opponents who play with a narrow midfield and struggle to deal with late runners.
