The midfield is constructed as a four man block that connects the defense to the heavy frontline. Matthias Sammer sits in the center to protect the two defenders and win the second ball. Beside him, Fernando Redondo acts as the playmaker, receiving the ball to progress through the thirds and find teammates in space. Christian Panucci and Bixente Lizarazu operate in the half spaces to provide width and support the transition. This midfield group works to press in a mid block and disrupt the opponent before they can reach the final third.

The attack is incredibly heavy, using four players to stretch the defence and pin the last defender. Youri Djorkaeff and Oliver Bierhoff lead the line as two central forwards, with Bierhoff acting as a target man to win the header and flick on the ball. Manuel Rui Costa and Gheorghe Hagi operate as wide attackers who cut inside to create chaos. Hagi uses his vision to play through the lines, while Rui Costa looks to combine in tight spaces to find the feet of the striker.

By committing so many bodies forward, the team can create numerical superiority in the attacking zones and force a long ball from the opponent.
