This team relies on a heavy counter attacking identity through a 5-2-3 formation. The primary goal is to sit deep, absorb pressure, and then hit the opposition with rapid verticality. This lineup is built to defend in a compact block and use the width of the pitch to stretch the play once the ball is won back.
CORNO guards the goal within a narrow defensive block that uses a back five. LETA sits at the heart of the central defense to command the area and win the header. Beside him, DE NISI and BRUNO act as the wider centre backs to provide cover. MAGNAVITA operates as a right wing back to provide width, while D'ACRI plays as an attacking wing back on the left to push up the flank. The defensive unit stays close together to deny the turn and make it hard for opponents to play through the middle.
The midfield works as a double pivot to protect the back line. BOSCAGLIA and CASELLA occupy the central spaces to control the rhythm and win the second ball. BOSCAGLIA acts to shield the defense, while CASELLA looks to carry the ball forward to link the lines. These two must work hard to press in a mid-block and ensure they do not get bypassed by quick passing combinations. Their main job is to recycle possession or immediately look for the attackers during a transition.
An aggressive front three provides the main threat in transition. CATANIA leads the line as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On the flanks, MOSCIARO and PERCIA MONTANI act as wide wingers who stay high to stretch the defense. MOSCIARO often cuts inside to find space, while PERCIA MONTANI looks to get to the byline and deliver early crosses. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and create opportunities to break quickly.
One major advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending in a low block. This makes it very difficult for teams to find space between the lines. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads when MAGNAVITA and D'ACRI push up to support the wingers. This ability to shift from a deep defensive unit to a wide attacking force allows the team to catch opponents off guard during transitions.
This 5-2-3 formation is a highly defensive setup designed to soak up pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high defensive line.
