Starting Lineup
CASILLAS · PUYOL · CANNAVARO · COLE · EVRA · XAVI · PIRLO · GERRARD · HENRY · DEL PIERO · VILLAFocusing on high pressing and rapid transitions, this lineup utilizes a 2-5-3 formation. The intent is to dominate the central areas and use a heavy front three to pin the opposition defense. This lineup seeks to win the ball back high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position.
Casillas acts as the last line of defense behind a very aggressive two man central defense. Cannavaro and Puyol operate as the two central defenders, where Cannavaro relies on his reading of the game and Puyol provides immense aerial strength and grit. Because there are only two defenders, they must hold a high line to squeeze the space, meaning they often act as a sweeping unit to cover any long balls played behind them.
The midfield is built around a central hub with a three man core that expands into a five man line. Pirlo acts as the deep lying playmaker, dropping deep to recycle possession and spray long passes. Beside him, Cole and Evra operate as two defensive midfielders who shield the back line and cover the wide areas when the team loses the ball. Xavi moves into the left half space to control the tempo and find teammates through the lines, while Gerrard operates on the right, driving forward with the ball and making late runs into the box to support the attack.
Up front, the team employs three attackers to stretch the defense. Henry acts as the central striker, using his pace to run in behind and his ability to drift wide to create space. He is flanked by Villa on the left and Del Piero on the right. Villa and Del Piero act as inverted wingers who cut inside to shoot or link up play with the midfield. This front three presses from the front to force the opposition into mistakes and creates constant movement to pull defenders out of position.
This formation offers massive numerical superiority in the central midfield zones. By having Pirlo, Xavi, and Gerrard working in the middle, the team can easily control the rhythm of the game and find gaps in a low block. The wide overloads created when the defensive midfielders cover the flanks allow the wingers to focus on attacking the half spaces.
This 2-5-3 formation is a high risk, high reward system designed for total dominance. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a parked bus through heavy central pressure and rapid wide play.
