Starting Lineup

A high press and rapid verticality define the identity of Cruzeiro in this 4-3-3. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately transition into attacking movements to catch the opposition off balance. By maintaining a high line, the team looks to dominate the territory and force errors in the middle third.

The defensive unit starts with the goalkeeper acting as the first point of distribution. A flat back four protects the central areas, with the LCB and RCB tasked to hold their positions and cover the space behind the midfield. The LB and RB provide width and are expected to push high to support the attack, while the central defenders must be ready to intercept long balls and dominate in the air. This backline must shift quickly to close gaps when the team loses possession.

Cruzeiro controls the center of the pitch through a three man midfield. Samuel acts as the pivot to shield the defense and collect the ball from the back. Edu and João occupy the spaces on either side of him to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. While Samuel stays deep to protect the center, Edu and João can step up to press opponents or slide passes between the lines to find the forwards.

The attacking front line relies on three players to stretch the opposition. Sandro leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and bring others into play. On the flanks, Higor and Savio operate as wide wingers, looking to cut inside or beat their markers to create crossing opportunities. These attackers are the first line of defense, pressing the opposition defenders to force hurried clearances.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads. When the LB and RB push forward, they join Higor and Savio to overwhelm the opposition full backs. Another advantage is the compactness of the midfield, which allows Samuel, Edu, and João to intercept passes and launch quick transitions. This setup allows the team to move from a defensive block to a scoring position in just a few passes.
