Atlético Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Oblak · Le Normand · Hancko · Ruggeri · Pubill · Koke · Griezmann · Simeone · Álvarez · Sørloth · BaenaPrioritizing defensive solidity and rapid transitions, Atlético employs a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents with verticality. The goal is to remain hard to beat while creating chances through direct runs and quick passing in the final third.
Jan Oblak stands between the posts to command the penalty area. A back five provides a dense defensive block where Koke acts as a central defender to organize the line. Le Normand and Hancko occupy the remaining central spots, focusing on aerial strength and covering spaces behind the wing backs. Ruggeri and Pubill operate as the wide defenders, tasked with tracking back to form a flat five when defending or pushing high to provide width when the team has the ball.
The midfield operates as a three man unit that connects the defense to the attack. Simeone and Baena occupy the central roles, working to intercept passes and shield the back line. Baena looks to drive forward and break the line with his passing range. Griezmann occupies the attacking midfield role, acting as the creative link that operates between the midfield and the two forwards. He drops deep to pick up the ball and helps the team transition from defense to attack.
In the attacking phase, Atlético uses two strikers to pressure the opponent defenders. Sørloth and Álvarez lead the line, with Sørloth acting to hold up the ball and create space. Álvarez works with high pressing intensity to disrupt the opposition build up. This two man front line forces the opposition back, while Griezmann finds pockets of space to feed the strikers. The wide players, Ruggeri and Pubill, provide the necessary width to stretch the defense.
One major advantage for Atlético is the compactness they maintain when defending in a low block. The proximity between the back five and the midfield trio makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads when Ruggeri and Pubill overlap to support the attack. This movement allows the team to switch play quickly and isolate attackers in one on one situations.
This 5-3-2 formation makes Atlético a very difficult unit to break down in low block situations. It is best suited for games against possession heavy teams where sitting deep and exploiting space on the counter attack is required.
