Starting Lineup

GK · CB · CB · LB · RB · DMF · CMF · AMF · ST / False 9 · RW · LW

To prioritize defensive solidity and quick transitions, this lineup utilizes a 5-2-3 formation. The team seeks to sit deep in a mid-block to deny space behind the defense before hitting opponents in behind once the ball is won. This 5-2-3 setup allows the team to remain compact while maintaining enough numbers forward to exploit gaps in the opposition lines.

The GK acts as the last line of defense, working behind a deep defensive block. A back five consists of CB as the central anchor, flanked by CB as the left center-back and CB as the right center-back. To add width, LB acts as a left wing back to push high, while RB serves as a right wing back to support the flank. The DMF sits directly in front of the central defenders to protect the zone and pick up runners. This unit works together to squeeze the space between the lines and force the opposition wide.

In the middle of the pitch, a double pivot provides the engine for the team. RCM and LCM work to connect the defense to the attack. RCM focuses on shielding the defense and recycling possession, while LCM uses their ability to drive forward with the ball and press aggressively to win the ball high. These two players must be disciplined to cover the spaces left by the wing backs when they push forward, ensuring the midfield does not get bypassed easily.

The attacking unit utilizes three players across the front to stretch the defense. LW and RW act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull the opposition full backs away from the center. ST operates as a false nine, dropping into midfield to create link-up play between the lines and draw center backs out of position. This movement creates space for the LCM to arrive late into the box or for the wingers to cut inside and find the feet of the striker.

One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads when the LB and RB push high to support the wingers. The team also benefits from great compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders form a dense block that is difficult to break down through the center. The speed of transition allows the team to move from a deep block to a full attacking force in seconds.

This formation is built for teams that want to defend deep and strike with heavy verticality. It is best suited for facing dominant sides that play with high defensive lines.
