Starting Lineup

Prioritizing defensive solidity and a compact low block, Audax operates within a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before looking to hit opponents on the break. By packing the central areas, the team aims to force opponents wide and minimize space between the lines. This style of play requires immense discipline and patience to maintain the defensive integrity over ninety minutes.

Ahumada sits between the posts to command the penalty area and organize the back line. A central trio of Ferrario, Ortiz, and Pina forms a deep defensive wall that is difficult to penetrate. Ferrario and Pina act as the wide center backs to cover the spaces vacated by the wing backs, while Ortiz holds the central position to win headers and intercept passes. Aedo and Matus act as wing backs, tasked with tracking back to form a five man line when defending and pushing up to provide width when the ball is won.

The midfield works as a flat four to shield the defenders and congest the center of the pitch. Cabral and Guajardo occupy the wide roles to track opposing wingers and help the wing backs. In the middle, Chiaverano and Mateos work to protect the zone in front of the center backs. These two players must work hard to intercept passes and immediately look to break the line with vertical passes once the ball is recovered. This midfield unit connects the defensive block to the lone forward.

Audax relies on a lone striker, Coelho, to lead the line during attacks. Because the team spends much of the match defending, Coelho must be able to hold up the ball and wait for support. The attacking movements are designed to create quick transitions, with Cabral and Guajardo pushing forward to support the striker. The goal is to use the width provided by the wing backs to stretch the opposition and deliver crosses into the box for Coelho to finish.

One major advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending, making it very hard for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Aedo and Matus step up to join the midfielders in the transition phase.
