Starting Lineup

A. Cejas · E. Figueroa · H. de León (C) · Leandro · L. Júnior · T. Cerezo · P. Isidoro · Falcão · Zico · Reinaldo · Careca

Newell's adopts a 5-3-2 formation to prioritize defensive stability while looking to strike quickly on the break. This lineup focuses on a compact block that makes it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines. The team aims to stay solid in the middle and use the width provided by the wing backs to transition from defense to attack.

A. Cejas acts as the last line of defense behind a back five. The central trio consists of T. Cerezo, E. Figueroa, and the captain H. de León, who leads the defensive unit. H. de León organizes the line and covers space when others step up to intercept. Leandro and L. Júnior operate as wing backs, tasked with tracking back to form a flat back five when defending deep or pushing up to provide width in transition. The defenders aim to stay close together to deny through balls.

A three man midfield occupies the central zone to control the tempo. P. Isidoro and Falcão work to protect the center and break up play, often sitting deeper to shield the defenders. Operating in the attacking midfield role, Zico acts as the link between the holding players and the strikers. He uses his passing range to switch play and find the forwards. This midfield trio must work hard to cover the ground between the defensive line and the front two.

The attack relies on two forwards, Reinaldo and Careca, to lead the line. Careca works to hold up the ball and bring others into play, using his clinical movement in the box. Reinaldo can play as a second striker, dropping slightly deeper to pull defenders out of position. Wide play is generated when Leandro or L. Júnior overlap to cross the ball into the box. The two strikers press the opposition defenders to force mistakes and win the ball high up the pitch.

This formation offers significant defensive compactness when the team sits deep in a low block. By having three central defenders and three midfielders, Newell's can crowd the center and prevent opponents from playing through the middle. Another advantage is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs push forward, leaving the opposition wingers to decide whether to track them or stay narrow. This creates space for Zico to operate in the pockets.

The 5-3-2 formation provides a reliable platform for a team that wants to stay hard to beat and strike on the counter. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their defensive line.
