Derby Football Formation
Starting Lineup
JACOB WIDELL (ZETTERSTRÖM) · MAX (JOHNSTON) · SONDRE (LANGAS) · DION (SANDERSON) · DERRY (MURKIN) · BOBBY (CLARK) · OSCAR (FRAULO) · SAMMIE (SZMODICS) · BEN (BRERETON DÍAZ) · CARLTON (MORRIS) · PATRICK (AGYEMANG)A high pressing and vertical identity defines this Derby lineup in a 2-5-3. The team aims to dominate the ball in the middle of the pitch and push the opposition back into their own half. By spreading players across the width of the pitch, the formation creates constant passing lanes to move the ball forward quickly. This specific formation focuses on controlling the central zones to force turnovers high up the field.
Jacob Widell guards the goal as the last line of defense. In front of him, a narrow back two consists of SONDRE and Dion. These two central defenders must stay compact to cover the wide areas when the midfield pushes up. Because there are only two players in the back line, SONDRE and Dion need to step up to intercept long balls and show great strength in one on one duels. The defensive unit functions by staying close together to prevent opponents from playing through the center.
The midfield acts as the engine room for Derby, utilizing a five man block to dominate the center. DERRY and Max sit in a double pivot to shield the two central defenders and pick up runners. Oscar and Bobby operate in the half spaces to link the defense to the attack, with Oscar and Bobby providing the ability to break the line with vertical passes. Sammie plays as the attacking midfielder, operating behind the striker to find pockets of space and create chances. This group provides the necessary numbers to control the tempo and switch play.
An aggressive front three provides the main threat in the attacking third. PATRICK and Ben act as wide wingers, ready to cut inside or push high to stretch the opposing defense. CARLTON leads the line as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support. The attack is built through quick combinations between Sammie and the front three, while PATRICK and Ben press the opposition full backs to win the ball back high.
One major advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows the team to pin opponents deep. The presence of five players in the middle makes it very difficult for the other side to play through the center. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when the wingers like PATRICK and Ben pull defenders out of position, leaving space for Oscar or Bobby to exploit. The team can also transition rapidly from a midfield press into a direct attack.
This 2-5-3 formation relies on intense pressing and central dominance to dictate the game. It is best suited for matches where the team can exploit a disorganized opponent through quick vertical transitions.
