Starting Lineup

High intensity attacking football defines the identity of FC Rapid as they deploy a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition through direct vertical play and constant pressure in the final third. By committing many players forward, the team seeks to dominate the offensive zones and force turnovers high up the pitch.

Guarding the net, GK acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit sits in a flat back four consisting of LB, CB, CB, and RB. The two CB players focus on holding the line and marking the opposition strikers, while the full backs must track back quickly to cover the wide areas. When the team pushes up, the RB and LB need to balance their desire to overlap with the necessity to protect against long balls played into the channels.

The midfield functions through a double pivot consisting of CDM and CDM. These two players are tasked with shielding the defense and breaking up play through interceptions and tackles. They act as the link between the back four and the heavy attacking force ahead of them. One CDM may drop deeper to help the CB players, while the other looks to press the ball and immediately find the forwards to start a transition.

In the attacking phase, FC Rapid pushes four players into the opponent's territory. The ST and CAM operate centrally to occupy the defenders, while LW and RW provide maximum width by hugging the touchlines. The LW and RW look to cut inside or deliver crosses, creating chaos in the box. This high line of four forces the opposition to sit deep to avoid being caught by quick passes that break the line.

A primary strength of this 4-2-4 formation is the ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the attacking third. By flooding the front line, the team can isolate wide players in one on one situations. Additionally, the heavy presence of players near the opposition goal allows for a very high press, which can trap the opponent in their own half and create rapid scoring opportunities.
