A heavy focus on defensive solidity and quick transitions defines the 4-4-2 formation used by Boca. This lineup aims to stay compact and react quickly to turnovers. By maintaining two banks of four, the team can control large areas of the pitch while staying organized to defend against counter attacks.

MARCHESIN acts as the last line of defense in goal. Ahead of him, a flat back four maintains a disciplined line to protect the central areas. BLANCO and WEIGANDT provide width from the flanks, with the expectation that they will overlap to support the midfield. In the center, COSTA and DI LOLLO focus on marking the opposition forwards and winning aerial duels. This defensive unit works together to step up when the ball is far away and drop back to cover space behind them.

The midfield operates with a single pivot that connects to a wider bank of four. PAREDES sits in front of the defense to shield the back line and intercept passes. Beside him, ASCACIBAR and DELGADO operate in the central channels to drive forward and link play. ARANDA moves higher up the pitch as an attacking midfielder to provide more creativity. This midfield group must shift horizontally to block passing lanes and ensure they do not get overrun in the center.

Boca employs two forwards to lead the line and put pressure on the opposition defenders. BAREIRO and MERENTIEL operate as the two primary attackers. They work together to press the opposition backline and force mistakes. The movement of these two players is designed to stretch the defense, either by making runs in behind or dropping deep to hold up the ball. This movement creates space for ARANDA and the wider midfielders to push into advanced positions.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the central midfield when the players move toward the ball. The presence of PAREDES allows the other midfielders to push higher and press in coordinated waves. Additionally, the team can isolate opponents in one on one situations on the wings by using the wide midfielders and overlapping full backs to create overloads.

This 4-4-2 setup provides a balance between defensive stability and vertical attacking intent. It is a formation best suited for games against teams that dominate possession, allowing Boca to sit deep and strike on the break.
