River Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Beltran (41) · Montiel (29) · M. Quarta (28) · Rivero (13) · Acuña (21) · Castaño (22) · Vera (15) · Lencina (39) · Juanfer (10) · Colidio (11) · Salas (7)A high pressing and vertical style of play defines River in this 5-3-2 formation. The lineup relies on quick transitions and direct movement to break lines. By maintaining a compact block, the team looks to win the ball high up the pitch and launch immediate attacks through the center.
Beltran acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit sits in a back three with Vera acting as the central anchor. M. Quarta plays as the right sided center back, using his ball playing ability to start attacks, while Rivero covers the left side. Wide defenders provide much of the width, with Montiel acting as the right wing back to push high up the pitch and Acuña playing as the left wing back to overlap in the final third. This system allows the back line to sit deep or step up to compress the space between the units.
In the middle of the park, a three man midfield provides the connection between the defense and the attack. Lencina and Castaño operate as the two central midfielders who sit closer to the defensive line to intercept passes and shield the back three. Juanfer plays as the attacking midfielder, acting as the main creator who stays between the lines to find space. This midfield trio works to hold the ball under pressure and quickly switch play to the wide areas.
The attacking force consists of two forwards working in close proximity. Salas and Colidio operate as the two strikers, often playing as a second striker and a lone striker depending on the movement of the ball. They are tasked to press the opposition defenders and make runs into the channels to stretch the back line. The movement of Colidio and Salas creates space for Juanfer to operate in the pockets.
Several tactical advantages emerge from this lineup. The presence of Montiel and Acuña creates wide overloads when they push forward to support the attack. The team also finds numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch when the wing backs tuck in. Defensively, the three center backs provide great aerial strength and cover against central runners, making the team very hard to break down through the middle.
River uses this 5-3-2 to dominate teams that play with a high defensive line through rapid counter attacks. This formation is best suited for matches where the team needs to remain compact while threatening through direct vertical passing.
