Alisson acts as the last line of defense, using his sweeping ability to clear danger. The back line sits high to squeeze the space. Virgil van Dijk leads the center, using his aerial strength and ability to read the game to intercept passes. Jérémy Jacquet sits beside him to cover the right side. Federico Dimarco and Jeremie Frimpong act as wide defenders who can push high up the pitch to add width, making the defensive unit very active in moving forward.

The midfield functions through a double pivot composed of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister. Mac Allister uses his passing range to link the defense to the attack and break lines with direct passes. In front of the pivot, Yan Diamondé, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Florian Wirtz occupy the middle and half spaces. Szoboszlai uses his ball carrying and work rate to drive the team forward, while Wirtz finds space between the lines to create chances. This five man unit makes it very hard for opponents to control the ball.

Attack is spearheaded by a lone striker, Hugo Ekitiké, who must hold up the ball to bring others into play. Since there are no natural wingers, the width comes from the movements of the wide midfielders and full backs. Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai move centrally to support Ekitiké, while the wide players look to cut inside or overlap. The front line focuses on pressing in waves to force turnovers high up the pitch.

A major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the central area. By having five players in the middle, Liverpool can control the tempo and block passing lanes. The team also gains wide overloads when Jeremie Frimpong and Federico Dimarco push up to support the midfield.
