Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Svilar · Mancini · Ndicka · Ghilardi · Konè · Cristante · Pisilli · Venturino · Tzimikas · Rensch · MalenA heavy emphasis on defensive stability and rapid transition defines the Roma lineup in a 5-2-3. This formation seeks to absorb pressure before quickly breaking the lines through wide areas or direct vertical passes. By maintaining a compact unit, the team creates a platform to launch attacks that catch opponents out of position.
Svilar acts as the last line of defense, organizing the back unit from deep. The defense consists of a back three composed of Ghilardi, Mancini (C), and Ndicka. Mancini (C) leads the line as the dominant presence in the air and the primary organizer. Ghilardi and Ndicka provide cover to the sides, allowing the unit to shift collectively toward the ball. Tzimikas and Rensch operate as wing backs, tasked with providing width and stretching the opposition. They must track back to form a five man line when defending deep, but they are also expected to overlap into the final third to support the attack.
The midfield functions as a double pivot designed to control the center of the pitch. Cristante and Konè occupy the two central roles, acting as the engine room for the club. Cristante provides experience to shield the defense and disrupt opposition play, while Konè uses his physicality to drive forward and carry the ball through the middle. This duo must work in tandem to break the line of the opposition press and connect the back three to the forward line.
In the attacking third, Roma employs three forwards to pressure the opposition defense. Malen operates as the lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball and making runs into the channels. On the flanks, Pisilli and Venturino act as wide attackers. Pisilli works on the left to cut inside and create space, while Venturino pushes on the right. This trio is expected to press high, forcing mistakes in the opponent's defensive third to trigger quick transitions.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Tzimikas and Rensch push high. This forces opposition wingers to track back, pinning them deep. Additionally, the presence of a back three provides security against counter attacks, as players like Ndicka and Ghilardi can step up to intercept passes while Mancini (C) holds his position. This allows the wing backs to take more risks in the attacking phase.
This 5-2-3 formation relies on defensive compactness and rapid verticality to exploit spaces behind the opponent. It is most effective against teams that commit many players forward and leave gaps in their defensive transition.
