Starting Lineup

A high pressing and vertical style defines RB Leipzig and their 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the pitch through heavy pressure and rapid transitions that force opponents into mistakes. The goal is to squeeze the space in the middle and launch direct attacks toward the goal as quickly as possible.

Péter Gulacsi sits between the posts to oversee the defensive unit. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Lukeba and Orban, who must remain very disciplined. Since there are only two dedicated defenders, Lukeba and Orban need to cover large spaces and be ready to intercept long balls or step up to stop runners. They act as the foundation while the rest of the team pushes high up the pitch.

Control of the middle comes through a dense five man midfield. Raum operates as the left defensive midfielder to provide width and cover the flank, while Nedeljkovic sits in a deep role to shield the two central defenders. Seiwald and Schlager occupy the central areas to win second balls and break the lines with their passing. Baumgartner sits ahead of them as an attacking midfielder to connect the midfield to the front three and find pockets of space between the opposition lines.

The attacking trio consists of three wide players and a central striker. Nusa stays wide on the left to stretch the defense, while Harder operates on the right to cut inside and threaten the goal. Romulo leads the line as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the opposition defenders back. This front three works together to press the opposition backline immediately upon losing possession.

RB Leipzig gains a major advantage through numerical superiority in the central midfield zone. Having Seiwald, Schlager, and Baumgartner in close proximity allows them to overwhelm opponents in the middle of the park. The formation also allows for quick wide overloads when Raum or the wingers push forward to create situations where they can cross or isolate defenders in one on one battles.

This aggressive lineup relies on high intensity to disrupt the opponent's rhythm. It is a formation best suited for games where the team wants to dictate the tempo through constant pressure and quick verticality.
