Rice acts as the central anchor in the middle of the back line to drop deep and cover space. Timber provides width on the right side as a wing back, while Hincapié pushes up the left to support the attack. The three central defenders stay compact to block passing lanes and protect the area.

The midfield operates as a double pivot to connect the defense to the front three. Ødegaard, who is the captain (C), occupies the right central midfield role to drive the play and create chances with his passing range. Anderson sits alongside him on the left to help break the line and provide balance. This pair must work hard to track back and protect the space between the lines while ensuring the ball moves from the back three into the attacking third.
