Bologna Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Castro · Cambiaghi · Miranda · Sohm · Lucumí · Heggem · Orsolini · Freuler · Ferguson · Odgaard · SkorupskiA heavy emphasis on verticality and midfield control defines the Bologna lineup in this 2-5-3 formation. High pressing and rapid transitions form the core of how this team intends to control matches. By crowding the central areas, Bologna looks to dominate the middle of the pitch and force turnovers in advanced positions.
Skorupski acts as the last line of defense behind a compact central pairing. Lucumí and Heggem operate as the two central defenders, where they must remain disciplined to cover the space left by the advanced midfield. The two defenders need to step up to intercept passes and stay aware of runners behind them, as they do not have full backs to provide wide cover. This unit must remain extremely tight when sitting deep to prevent opponents from finding gaps between the lines.
Control of the center is managed through a five man midfield unit. Sohm and Miranda act as the double pivot to shield the back line, with Sohm focusing on breaking up play and Miranda helping to connect the defense to the rest of the team. Freuler and Ferguson push higher into the half spaces to drive forward and break the lines, while Odgaard operates as the attacking ten to create chances. This group links the defense to the attack by recycling possession and finding pockets of space between the opposition midfield and defense.
The attacking front line pushes high to keep the opposition pushed back. Castro leads the way as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and work with his teammates. On the flanks, Orsolini and Cambiaghi provide width and act as wide wingers to stretch the defense. These three attackers press in coordinated waves, with Orsolini and Cambiaghi looking to cut inside or cross while Castro makes runs to disrupt the central defenders.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages, particularly through numerical superiority in the midfield. By having five players in the middle, Bologna can easily overload the central zone and win second balls. The team also gains an advantage through the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the attacking midfielders to suffocate the opponent in their own half. This creates many opportunities for quick transitions when the ball is won.
Bologna relies on this aggressive 2-5-3 to dominate possession and squeeze the space available to the opponent. This formation is best suited for games where the team needs to dictate the tempo against mid block teams.
