A focus on direct attacking and defensive compactness defines the Romania lineup in a 5-2-3. This formation seeks to control transitions by absorbing pressure and quickly breaking the lines through the center and wide areas. In goal, Ionuț Radu oversees the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three made of Burca, Dragusin, and Screciu. Dragusin and Burca act as the side center backs to cover the wider channels, while Screciu holds the central position to dominate in the air and direct the unit. Ratiu and Bancu operate as wing backs, tasked to push high up the pitch to provide width while ensuring they track back to form a five man defensive block when the team sits deep.

The midfield works as a double pivot to manage the center of the pitch. Răzvan Marin and Hagi occupy the central roles, tasked with controlling the tempo and connecting the back three to the front three. Răzvan Marin often drops deeper to shield the defense and intercept passes, while Hagi looks to drive forward and use his passing range to find the attackers. This pair must stay compact to prevent opponents from playing through the middle.

Attacking the opposition requires the front three to work in unison. Birligea leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Mihăilă and Man operate as wide attackers on the left and right, frequently cutting inside to create numerical superiority in the half spaces. The movement of Mihăilă and Man forces defenders to shift, creating gaps for Birligea to exploit or for the midfield to run into.

Romania gains a massive advantage from the wide overloads created when Ratiu and Bancu overlap their wingers. This creates constant pressure on the opposition full backs and allows for frequent crosses into the box. Additionally, the team is very difficult to break down due to the compactness of the five man defense and the two central midfielders, which makes it hard for opponents to find passing lanes between the lines.

This formation provides a platform for rapid counter attacks and a sturdy defensive foundation. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession, as Romania can sit deep and strike on the break.
