Starting Lineup
Raya/Seimen (GK) · Calafiori/Hincapié (LB) · Gabriel/Bastoni (CB) · Saliba/Mosquera (CB) · Timber/Livramento (RB) · Zubimendi/Tonali (DM) · Rice/Merino/Goretzka (LCM) · Ødegaard/Eze/Dowman (RCM) · Gordon/Godts (LW) · Saka/Madueke (RW) · Alvarez/Gyökeres/Esposito (CF)Arsenal utilizes a 5-2-3 formation designed for high pressing and rapid transitions. This lineup focuses on controlling the middle of the pitch while using heavy width to stretch the opposition. The team aims to win the ball high up the pitch and use immediate vertical passes to catch defenses before they can settle.
Raya acts as the last line of defense, playing a key role in starting attacks from the back. The defensive unit operates with a back three consisting of Saliba, Gabriel, and Zubimendi. Saliba and Gabriel provide immense aerial strength and physical presence to block crosses, while Zubimendi sits centrally to sweep up loose balls. Calafiori and Timber operate as wide defenders on the left and right flanks. They push high to provide width and overlap the attackers, but they must track back quickly to maintain the defensive block.
The midfield operates with a double pivot consisting of Ødegaard and Rice. Ødegaard uses his passing range to break the line and connect the defense to the attack, often looking to find the forwards in space. Rice plays a more holding role to shield the back three and intercept passes in the middle third. This duo must work hard to cover ground and ensure the team does not get bypassed through the center.
The attacking front three features Gordon on the left, Saka on the right, and Alvarez as the lone striker. Gordon and Saka act as wide attackers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. Saka uses his dribbling style to beat his marker and drive toward the box. Alvarez plays as a central target to hold up the ball and bring others into the play. These three forwards press in coordinated waves to force turnovers in the final third.
Arsenal gains a clear advantage through the ability to create wide overloads. When Calafiori or Timber push forward, they create numerical superiority alongside Gordon or Saka. Another strength is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders sit close together to block passing lanes. This allows the team to switch play quickly once they regain possession.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a heavy presence in both boxes and relies on intense pressing. It is best suited for matches against teams that play a high line or struggle to deal with wide overloads.
