Starting Lineup

Zubizarreta · Bolaños · Goikoetxea · Tirapu · Núñez · De Andrés · Gallego · Rojo © · Dani · Argote · Noriega

Athletic uses a 4-3-3 formation to drive a vertical and high pressing game. This lineup focuses on winning the ball in advanced areas and moving the play forward through the flanks as quickly as possible. The intent is to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition and create gaps in the middle.

Zubizarreta stays between the posts to command the area and start play with his distribution. The back line functions as a flat back four with Bolaños and Goikoetxea acting as the central defenders. Goikoetxea provides aerial strength to defend crosses and clears the danger. Bolaños focuses on his positioning to cover the space when the full backs push up. On the sides, Tirapu and Núñez work to defend the wide channels. Tirapu can overlap to support the wingers, while Núñez keeps the line high to keep the team compact.

The midfield consists of a single pivot with two central midfielders supporting the play. De Andrés sits in front of the defense to shield the back four and intercept passes. He acts as the link between the defense and the rest of the team. Gallego and the captain Rojo (C) operate in the left and right central roles. Rojo (C) has the role to drive forward and break the line with his passing. Gallego helps to shift the play and maintain control in the middle. This group works to press the opponent in the center to win possession.

The attack features three players working in the final third. Noriega acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and bring others into the game. On the wings, Dani and Argote provide the width needed to stretch the defense. Dani looks to cut inside and move into central positions, while Argote uses his pace to stay wide and cross the ball. The front three press high to force the opposition into mistakes.

Athletic possesses the ability to create wide overloads when Tirapu pushes forward to support Dani. This formation also allows for numerical superiority in the midfield to dominate the center of the pitch. The team can press high in coordinated waves to win the ball back quickly. This helps to create chances through rapid transitions.

This 4-3-3 formation is built for aggressive, high pressing football. It is most effective against opponents that struggle to play out from the back or leave space behind their defenders.
