Jorge and Ricardo act as the wide center backs to cover the channels, while Costinha sits in the center to provide aerial strength and command the box. Paulo and Jose act as wing backs, tasked with providing width and tracking back to help the defense when the team loses the ball. The whole unit works to stay compact and block passing lanes.

The midfield operates with three central players who connect the defense to the front line. Maniche and Lucho hold their positions to shield the back three, with Maniche looking to drive forward and break the line with his energy. Deco plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers, using his passing range to create chances and link the play. This midfield group must work hard to intercept passes and ensure the team stays central and hard to play through.

FC Porto uses two forwards, Mario and Benin, to lead the attack. Instead of staying wide, these two strikers stay central to pin the opposing center backs and hold up the ball. This creates space for Deco to operate in the pockets between the lines.
