Starting Lineup
Raya/Kepa (GK) · Calafiori/Hincapié (LB) · Gabriel/Valdepeñas (CB) · Saliba/Mosquera (CB) · Timber/Wesley (RB) · Zubimendi/Anderson (DM) · Rice/Merino/Goretzka (LCM) · Ødegaard/Paz/Eze (RCM) · Kvaratskhelia/Martinelli (LW) · Saka/Madueke (RW) · Alvarez/Gyökeres/Tresoldi (CF)Arsenal uses a 5-2-3 formation to play a high press and direct style of football. This lineup focuses on being hard to break down while looking to use the full width of the pitch during attacks to stretch the opposition.
Raya/Kepa starts the play from the back in goal. The defensive unit consists of a back five where Zubimendi/Anderson sits in the center to protect the middle. Gabriel/Valdepeñas and Saliba/Mosquera provide the defensive cover and aerial strength on either side of the central zone. Calafiori/Hincapié and Timber/Wesley act as wing backs who push high to overlap and provide width through their runs. The unit can drop deep into a low block or step up to push the opposition back.
The midfield functions as a double pivot to manage the center of the park. Rice/Merino/Goretzka works to shield the defense and intercept passes to break up play. Ødegaard/Paz/Eze connects the defense to the attack by finding pockets of space to pass through the lines and create chances. This central pair helps the team maintain possession and switch play to the flanks to find open teammates.
The attack is built around three players who stretch the pitch. Kvaratskhelia/Martinelli and Saka/Madueke operate from the wide areas to cut inside or cross the ball into the box. Alvarez/Gyökeres/Tresoldi acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and run the channels. The front three press high to force mistakes and win the ball in advanced positions to start attacks.
A major strength for Arsenal is the ability to create wide overloads when Calafiori/Hincapié and Timber/Wesley join the attackers. The presence of Saliba/Mosquera and Gabriel/Valdepeñas provides strength in the air and allows the team to maintain a high line without being caught out. The team is also very effective at using the speed of transition to catch opponents out of position during a counter attack.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a balance of defensive coverage and attacking width. It is best suited for games against teams that rely on wide play or those that leave space behind their defensive line.
