The United States lineup utilizes a 4-5-1 formation. The team plays with a high press and relies on verticality to exploit spaces behind the opposition. Such a formation is built to play a fast paced game that focuses on quick transitions and pressing to win the ball back early.

M.Freese plays in goal to command the area. The back four uses S.Dest at right back and A.Robinson at left back, both prepared to overlap the midfield. C.Richards and the captain T.Ream (C) occupy the central positions to block passes and cover for the wide defenders. T.Ream (C) helps to organize the line and remains strong in the air. The defensive unit moves as a single block to keep the lines tight.

In the middle, the team uses a double pivot with T.Adams and J.Cardoso to shield the back four. T.Adams uses his pressing intensity and tackling ability to break up play. W.McKennie and C.Pulisic operate in the central areas to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. C.Pulisic uses his dribbling to cut inside and create openings. T.Weah provides the energy to run between the lines and push the team forward.

F.Balogun acts as a lone striker to lead the front line. He is responsible to press the defenders and hold up the ball to allow others to join the attack. Width is provided by the midfielders pushing wide or the full backs moving up. Movements are designed to create space for C.Pulisic or T.Weah to run into. The front line stays active to force mistakes in the opposition defense.

A primary advantage is the numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. This allows the United States to control the middle and limit the opponent. The ability to press high in coordinated waves also makes it difficult for teams to build from the back. Furthermore, the speed of transition allows for quick strikes when the ball is won.

This 4-5-1 formation is a compact and hard working lineup. It is best suited for facing teams that want to keep possession by sitting deep and waiting for the right moment to counter.
