Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Victor Gyokeres · Maduake · Saka · Martin Ǿdegaard · Declan Rice · Zubimendi · Calafiori · Gabriel · Saliba · Mosquera · RayaArsenal operates with a 5-2-3 formation that focuses on controlling the pitch through a heavy high press and quick verticality. This lineup is built to dominate the ball in the final third while maintaining enough personnel behind the ball to stop breaks. The goal is to squeeze the opponent in their own half and use quick transitions to punish mistakes.
Raya starts in goal to organize the back line and distribute the ball. The defensive unit consists of a back three made of Zubimendi, Gabriel, and Saliba. Saliba uses his recovery pace and strong positioning to cover space, while Gabriel provides aerial strength and aggressive tackling. Mosquera acts as the right wing back to provide width, and Calafiori plays as the left wing back, stepping up into midfield or pushing high to overlap. This formation allows the defenders to shift side to side to block passing lanes and protect the central zone.
The midfield consists of a pair of central players, Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard. Declan Rice acts as the shield for the defense, using his high pressing intensity and ability to intercept passes to stop attacks before they reach the back three. Martin Ødegaard operates as the primary creator, looking to break the line with precise passing and movement in the pockets of space. These two connect the defense to the attack by receiving from the center backs and quickly switching play to the wide areas.
The attacking front line uses three attackers to stretch the opponent. Victor Gyokeres plays as a lone striker, using his strength to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Maduake occupies the left wing to drive at defenders, while Saka operates on the right, often looking to cut inside to create shooting opportunities. The forwards are tasked to press the opposition center backs immediately, forcing them into rushed long balls or errors.
One major advantage for Arsenal is the ability to create wide overloads when Calafiori or Mosquera push forward to support the wingers. The team can also find numerical superiority in midfield when the wing backs move inside to help Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard. This compactness makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center, forcing them into wide areas where the back three can easily intercept the cross.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a balance of defensive solidity and aggressive attacking movement. It is best suited for games against teams that sit deep and require constant pressure to break them down.
