Athletic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Iribar © · Gisasola · Goikoetxea · Oñaederra · Escalza · Villar · Irureta · Rojo II · Dani · Rojo I · ChurrucaAthletic use a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a high press and fast vertical football. The goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and move it forward quickly to catch the opponent out of position. Such a formation allows the team to control the center of the pitch while maintaining width in the final third.
In goal, the captain Iribar commands the area and organizes the line. A high line is maintained by the back four to squeeze the space in midfield. Oñaederra acts as an overlapping full back on the right side, while Escalza provides balance on the left. In the center, Goikoetxea and Gisasola form the core of the defense. Goikoetxea covers the central space while Gisasola tracks back to support the wide areas. Moving together, the unit stays compact to intercept passes.
The midfield works with a single pivot to hold the center. Villar sits in front of the defense to shield the back four and break up opposition play. Ahead of him, Irureta and Rojo II connect the lines. Irureta drives forward into pockets of space to help the build up, while Rojo II looks to break the line with vertical passes. This group works to win second balls and switch play to the wide areas.
Three attackers work to stretch the opposition defense. Churruca leads the line as a lone striker, holding up the ball to bring others into play. On the wings, Rojo I and Dani provide width and act as inverted wingers to cut inside. This movement creates space for the full backs to push up. When defending from the front, the trio works together to press the opposition defenders and force mistakes.
One major advantage of this Athletic lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having the front three and the midfield close together, they make it hard for the opponent to pass out from the back. Another strength is the wide overloads created when Oñaederra and Dani move into the same channel. This forces the opposing full back to make a difficult choice. They also show great speed of transition once the ball is won in midfield.
This 4-3-3 formation relies on high intensity and verticality to dominate games. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play under heavy pressure or those that sit deep in a low block.
