In the middle of the pitch, Russia employs a four man midfield line. Khokhlov acts as the anchor to shield the back three and intercept passes. Karpin and Alenichev sit on either side to drive the ball forward and connect the defense to the attack. Titov plays as the attacking midfielder to find pockets of space and deliver passes into the final third. This group must shift side to side to block passing lanes and maintain compactness.

The attacking side relies on a lone striker, Beschastnykh, to hold up the ball and lead the press. Because there is only one forward, the midfielders like Titov must push up to support him when the team breaks forward. The width comes from the wing backs, Solomatin and Kovtun, who aim to cross the ball into the box. This formation requires the forward to work hard to pressure defenders and create space for late runs from the midfield.

By sitting deep with three central defenders and four midfielders, the team can limit the number of players in the box. Another strength is the potential for quick transitions when the midfielders win the ball.
