Athletic Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Zubizarreta · Liceranzu · Goikoetxea · Urkiaga · Núñez · De Andrés · Gallego · Sola · Dani © · Argote · SarabiaAthletic plays a 5-4-1 formation that focuses on being defensively solid. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure while looking to hit teams on the break. The main goal is to remain compact and deny space between the lines, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
Sarabia stays between the posts to organize the backline from deep. The defensive unit uses a back three consisting of De Andrés, Gallego, and Sola to hold the central zone. De Andrés and Gallego focus on aerial strength and covering space, while Sola acts as the anchor. On the flanks, Dani (C) and Argote act as wing backs who must track back to form a five man line when defending. Dani (C) provides leadership from the left, while Argote provides width to help the defense shift across the pitch.
The midfield works as a flat four to block passing lanes. Liceranzu and Goikoetxea sit in the center to shield the defense and break up play. Liceranzu works to intercept passes and protect the central defenders, while Goikoetxea looks to win the ball and drive forward to connect with the attack. On the sides, Urkiaga and Núñez provide width and support the wing backs. Urkiaga and Núñez must track back to assist the defense and help maintain a compact block.
Athletic utilizes a lone striker in Zubizarreta to lead the line. Zubizarreta is tasked to hold up the ball and fight against center backs to allow the midfielders to push up. The attack relies on wide runners like Urkiaga and Núñez to provide service via crosses. When the team wins the ball, the wide players push high to create width, while Zubizarreta moves to pin the opposition defense back.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its compactness when defending. By having five players across the back and four in front, Athletic can easily shift to cover wide areas or clog the middle. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads during transitions. The team can quickly switch play from one side to the other to exploit spaces left behind by attacking opponents.
The 5-4-1 formation is a disciplined system built for defensive stability and quick counter attacks. It is best suited for matches against dominant teams where Athletic needs to sit deep and frustrate the opponent.
