Starting Lineup

Zubizarreta · Liceranzu · Goikoetxea · Urkiaga · Núñez · De Andrés · Gallego · Sola · Dani © · Argote · Sarabia

Athletic plays a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to be defensively solid, relying on a compact unit to soak up pressure and look for moments to hit teams on the break. The main goal for Athletic is to maintain a narrow block that is hard to break through in central areas.

Sarabia acts as the last line of defense in goal. Ahead of him, the defense sits in a back five. Sola, De Andrés, and Gallego form the central trio to protect the middle and win aerial duels. On the flanks, Argote and Dani (C) act as wing backs who must cover the entire length of the pitch. Dani (C) leads the defensive unit, while the wing backs provide width when the team moves up the pitch.

The midfield functions as a flat bank of four to deny space between the lines. Liceranzu and Goikoetxea operate in the central roles, where they need to mark opponents and intercept passes. They work to shield the back three and win the ball back quickly. On the wings, Urkiaga and Núñez provide width in the middle third, helping to track back when the team loses possession and connecting the defense to the lone striker.

Athletic uses a lone striker in Zubizarreta to lead the line. Zubizarreta must hold up the ball and bring the midfielders into the play. Because there is only one forward, the width comes from Urkiaga and Núñez cutting inside or the wing backs pushing high. The forwards aim to press the opposition backline to force mistakes and create long ball opportunities.

This formation offers great compactness when defending, making it difficult for opponents to play through the middle. It also creates wide overloads when Dani (C) and Argote overlap their respective midfielders. The team can switch play quickly from one side to the other to catch the opposition out of position.

This 5-4-1 formation is a defensive way to play that focuses on being hard to beat. It is best suited for games against stronger teams where the goal is to sit deep and exploit space on the counter.
