Louisville utilizes a 3-6-1 formation designed to control the center of the pitch and dominate through heavy midfield numbers. This lineup focuses on a high press and controlling possession by crowding the middle third. The intention is to use a massive midfield block to squeeze the opponent and win the ball back quickly in high areas.

FAUROUX acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line consists of a back three with DAYES, ADAMS, and TOSCH. These three central defenders sit in a line to protect the central zone. DAYES, ADAMS, and TOSCH must step up together to intercept passes and cover the space behind when the midfield pushes forward. They hold a relatively high line to keep the team compact and reduce the distance between the defense and the center of the field.

The midfield is the core of the Louisville formation, utilizing a heavy six man block. DUNCAN and MORRIS form a double pivot to shield the defense and break up opposition attacks. Ahead of them, DAVILA and PEREZ operate in the central channels to connect the play and break the lines with passes. SERRANO and WILSON occupy the left and right attacking midfield roles to provide verticality. This heavy midfield presence allows the team to pass through the middle and control the tempo of the game.

In the attacking third, DONOVAN works as a lone striker. He must hold up the ball and wait for the supporting midfielders to arrive. SERRANO and WILSON push into advanced positions to support DONOVAN, creating a presence that stretches the opposition defense. This formation relies on the midfielders making late runs into the box to support the striker. The attack is built through quick passes in the central areas to find pockets of space between the opponent lines.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By having six players in the middle, the team can easily outnumber opponents and win second balls. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. When the ball is lost, the six midfielders and DONOVAN can immediately swarm the opponent to win it back. This creates a high level of compactness that makes it hard for other teams to find space in the middle.
