Athletic play a very direct game using a 5-4-1 formation. The lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting teams quickly on the break. De Andrés acts as the anchor in the middle while Gallego and Sola cover the spaces around him. Dani, the captain, and Argote act as the wing backs. They are expected to push high up the pitch to provide width but must track back quickly when the ball is lost. The defensive unit stays narrow to protect the central zone.

The midfield works as a flat four to block passing lanes. Liceranzu and Goikoetxea sit in the center to shield the back three and break up play. They look to intercept passes and quickly distribute the ball to the wings. Urkiaga and Núñez operate on the flanks to provide width and support the wing backs. This midfield group works to compress the space in the middle of the pitch, making it difficult for the opposition to play through the center.

Attacking moves rely on a lone striker, Zubizarreta, who must hold up the ball and fight for long passes. Because there is only one forward, the wide players Urkiaga and Núñez need to make runs into the box to support him. The attack is built through quick transitions where the midfielders look to break the line with direct passes. The wing backs Dani and Argote provide the necessary width to stretch the opposing defense during these fast breaks.

This formation offers a high level of compactness when defending in a low block. By keeping the lines close together, Athletic can force opponents into wide areas where they are less dangerous.
