This lineup is built for a high press and quick transitions. The team aims to win the ball high up the pitch and use vertical passing to catch the opposition off guard. It is a formation designed to control wide areas while staying compact when the ball is lost.
David Raya acts as the goalkeeper to start the build up. The defense uses a back five with Saliba and Mosquera on the right side, Gabriel and Calafiori in the middle, and Zubimendi and Merino providing additional cover. This wide central defensive unit ensures the team is dominant in the air and can step up to intercept passes. On the flanks, Timber and Palestra act as right wing backs to provide width, while Hall and Hincapié work as left wing backs to overlap and cross the ball. The whole back line works to maintain a high line to squeeze the space.
The midfield consists of a two man unit. Rice and Camavinga work to shield the defense and break the line with their driving runs. Ødegaard and Eze sit slightly higher to create chances and connect the defense to the attack. Rice uses his pressing intensity to win back possession, while Ødegaard uses his passing range to switch play. This midfield duo must track back to help the wing backs when the team loses the ball.
In the attacking third, Arsenal uses three attackers. Saka and Madueke occupy the right wing, while Kvaratskhelia and Martinelli play on the left. Alvarez and Gyökeres act as the lone striker to hold up the ball and bring others into play. The wingers often cut inside to create space for the wing backs to push forward. This attacking movement is meant to isolate wide players in one on one situations and create chaos in the box.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having three dedicated attackers and two midfielders nearby, the team can trap opponents in their own half. Another strength is the wide overload created when the wing backs like Hall and Timber push high up the pitch. This forces the opposition to shift constantly, leaving gaps in the middle for Rice or Ødegaard to exploit.
This 5-2-3 formation provides Arsenal with a heavy presence in both the wide and central zones. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a low block and struggle to handle high pressing.
