Ajax utilizes a 5-2-3 formation that aims for a high press and quick vertical transitions. This lineup is built to overwhelm opponents in the final third while maintaining a strong core to prevent counter attacks. The goal is to use width from the wing backs to stretch the opposition and create space in the middle for the central attackers to exploit.

Olij plays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of three central defenders with Janse, Kaplan, and Schuurs providing a solid base. Janse holds the center, while Kaplan and Schuurs look to intercept passes and step up to engage attackers. Veltman and Baas operate as wing backs, tasked with providing width and covering the flanks through wide runs. These players must track back quickly to ensure the team stays compact when the opponent holds possession.

The midfield functions with a double pivot consisting of Steur and Mokio. These two players sit in the center to shield the defense and win second balls. Steur works to connect the lines by receiving the ball from the defenders and finding the attackers, while Mokio looks to drive forward and break the line with progressive passes. They must stay close together to block passing lanes and prevent the opponent from playing through the middle.

In the attacking phase, Ajax uses three attackers to pressure the opponent. Dolberg leads the line as a lone striker, using his ability to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Godts and Carrizo play as wide attackers on the left and right flanks respectively. Godts often looks to cut inside to create shooting opportunities, while Carrizo uses his pace to stretch the play. The forwards press in unison to force mistakes high up the pitch.

This formation offers significant advantages through wide overloads when Veltman and Baas overlap the wingers. Having three central defenders allows for great compactness when defending a deep block. The presence of three attackers also allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations during rapid transitions. This setup forces the opposition to defend a large area of the pitch.

The 5-2-3 formation provides Ajax with a strong defensive foundation and heavy attacking width. This lineup is best suited for games against teams that play with a high defensive line or struggle to defend wide areas.
